Mosaic

Mosaic in the west corridor of the peristyle (1985/1987)

This mosaic is found in the west corridor of the peristyle in front of the entrance to the triclinium.

The corridor's floor is rectangular (8 x 3.50 m) and embedded in its centre, facing east, was a square panel whose main motif was the quadriga (chariot). The north and south of the corridor were chosen for the square panels which represent the Seasons of the Year, two by two, and all facing south. The five figurative panels, four Seasons and one with the figure of the quadriga are surrounded by a decorative frame of swastikas, in perspective. Outside them are the longitudinal borders along the inner and outer sides of the corridor.

The focus is on what remains of a triumphant quadriga, viewed from the front, which makes it easily identifiable through what is left of the heads, the legs and the fragments of two horses, which have survived to the present day and are seen in profile.

The mosaic is in situ and in its original substrate.
